These works share the same origin: 106 West Water St., St. Paul, MN, Fourth Floor. Literally the floor: they are all based on the patterns of cracks that radiate outward from the big pillars inside the warehouse, where I have studio space. They are done on canvas, in oil paint and a paste wax medium which gives them a lot of texture and translucent layers.

I am constantly surprised at the brightness and character of the animals who share our lives. The portraits I create -- in oil, pencils, and pastels -- are a tribute to each individual, no matter the breed or species. They make perfect gifts for yourself or someone you love. Nobody really Cares

where an artist went to college

I remember the day it really started,when I was a kid in south Florida.A Sunday afternoon when I was six or seven, and Dad took the family into an old abandoned house, out east nearGrandma's place. Imagining the kids who'd played with those broken toys; the footsteps of people on the floor where weeds were pushing through.Out back, an artesian well flowed right up from the ground, on its own. Discovery, sadness, water, adventure, memory -- all in one place that I never could find again, when I was old enough to try. I've been finding other places ever since, though, and finding what's wild, what's lost, what's been overlooked, neglected or left broken, what I can reveal or transform. I'm a muralist, an instructor, a fine artist, a traveler, and all of that work is about tapping into the life that's like a well beneath the surfaces we see. The art degree is great, but I'm still that kid from the south, wading into the weeds and through the gap in the fence, nudging someone else to come along. (In case you're wondering, University of South Florida, Tampa; I moved to Minnesota in 2008)
